Day 7: Interesting Facts About Nitrogen
Atomic Symbol: N; Atomic Number: 7; Atomic Mass: 14.0067
- Nitrogen composes 78.1% of the Earth’s air by volume and about 3% of a human’s body by weight.
- Dinitrogen (N2) has the strongest chemical bond and is highly unreactive, due to its strong triple-bond, stable electron configuration, and lack of dipole moment. This bond can only be broken when it is reduced by metals such as Lithium, to form Lithium Nitride (Li3N).
- It can be found or used in foods, coolants, gunpowder, rocket fuels, fertilizers, cleaning supplies, scuba tanks, generators and biological processes.
- Nitrogen in the from of Nitrogen Trifluoride plays a role in the Greenhouse Effect, while poisonous Nitrogen Dioxide is a key element in smog.
