History of Space Exploration
On January 31, 1958, the United States started to catch up to the Soviet’s advances, launching a satellite known as the Explorer I. It orbited the Earth for 12 years, finally ceasing to transmit data in May of 1958. In the above photo, Dr. Eberhard Rees, Major General John B Medaris, German-born rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger, Willi Mrazek and Dr. Walter Haeussermann discuss a full-scale model of Explorer I.
