History of Space Exploration
On April 12, 1961, the USSR bested the USA once again by putting the first human in outer space. Major Yuri Gagarin was this lucky Soviet cosmonaut, not only becoming the first human in space, but also the first to orbit the Earth. Within the Vostok I, Gagarin circled the Earth at over 27,000 kilometers per hour for the duration of the 108 minute flight.
